I’m not big on New Year’s Resolutions, but there are a few habits I’m trying to get into this year. For one, no more screens before bed and reading more! Even if it’s just 20 or 30 minutes before I turn the lights off. Below, five books that would be perfect for your next book club. And some of my favorite reading glasses so I can actually see what’s on the page.
The Spare by Prince Harry . Okay, come on – who’s not a little bit curious about what Prince Harry has to say? This is a history making book, and I can’t wait to dive into the dirt. To pair with a new spin on tradition, take a classic shape like these Wynton lenses from Caddis. I love the updated take on the tortoiseshell.
The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O’Farrell. For a more historical take on royal drama, Maggie O’Farrell’s dramatized account of a wild daughter from the famous Medici family in Renaissance era Italy is a page turner. Channel the artistic vibe of the Medici family into an extravagant pair of glasses, like these super-stylish red cat-eye Eyebobs readers or a pastel tortoise in pretty blue and beige.
All This Could Be Different by Sarah Thankam Mathews. If you’re looking for serious literary pursuit to kick off your year, this 2022 National Book Award Finalist is it. This is a stirring coming-of-age tale about a young immigrant who moves to Milwaukee and tries to build a life for herself. Sometimes you just want a sturdy, trustworthy pair of readers – just like the Midwest. You can’t go wrong with black square frames, or a chunky tortoise standard.
Your Table Is Ready by Michael Cecchi-Azzolina. If you loved Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential, this book dives into the dirty work of running the other half of a kitchen: front of house. A dishy tale for anyone who loves restaurants and wants to see how the sausage is made. For reading glasses, you’ll need something hyper-stylish to go with a fun night out. These Iris Apfel-esque black glasses or a bold blue square frame for Caddis.
Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. A charming, delightful novel about a 1960s scientist who finds herself an unlikely cooking tv star, this is the kind of can’t put it down book you’ll finish in one night. It’s as funny as it is unique. Follow a lead from the cover of this peppy pink, and get yourself a new pair of cat-eyed glasses from Kate Spade.
