If I’m spending my summer right, then I’m outside all the time. Whether it’s by the pool, by the beach, or on the golf course, I never leave the house without a hat. A big straw hat is great for sun protection, but it’s also adds a little more style than just a baseball hat. Shop our summer straw hats below.
There are a lot of ways to approach hats. Sometimes, you want something really glamorous, a flourish for your beach ensemble. I lovingly think of these at J.Lo hats. The brim might swoosh or just flop, but you’re definitely going to stand out! This Mint Velvet hat is a perfect example of bringing the drama. And it’s only $75! Maxwell has some great statement hats too, like this wide brim, stiffer option with a ladylike feel or this floppier hat with a scarf brim for added drama. Janessa Leone’s wide-brimmed raffia hat is a perfect splurgier piece, with a more casual edge that doesn’t lose out any elegance. It’s an Italian riviera beach hat, as opposed to a garden party hat.
Even in LA, not every day is a day at the beach. Sometimes you’re just going for a long walk with a friend, or a short walk through the farmer’s market to pick up some tomatoes. Sometimes you need something a little more practical. Enter: the bucket hat. I love this Madewell bucket hat or this Alex Mill version, perfect for throwing on with drawstring pants and a t-shirt.
The final category of hat is a little more structured, a little more ranch-inspired. The kind of hat Katherine Hepburn would wear, or Meghan Markle out for lunch in Montecito. Janessa Leone makes some really beautiful ones, like this Judith Hat with a brown leather band detail or this Rag and Bone Lana hat.
