Wicker, straw, and rattan are having a bit of a moment. It’s popping up everywhere from our tabletops to our closets, and I totally get why. It’s durable, it’s summery, and it’s classic. Just think of Jane Birkin traipsing around Paris with her effortlessly chic straw basket, or Kate Spade’s iconic series of animal shaped straw bags. It’s neutral, so it goes with everything in your closet. It’s textural, so it instantly lends warmth and dimension to any interior. Have I convinced you it’s the summer of straw yet?
Let’s start with the bags. If you’re looking for a picture perfect replica of Jane Birkin’s signature bag, then this well-priced option on Etsy is only a click away. This bamboo handled bag would be an insanely chic option for a date night, even if it’s just in your backyard. And you can only find the vintage Kate Spade bags on Ebay for a pretty penny these days, but Nordstrom’s wicker elephant is a good enough substitute for the real deal. There are plenty of totes, too, if you need something a little bit bigger to schlep around. How about this large woven tote from & Other Stories?
I’m not dressing up a lot right now, but I am dressing up my home. And this summer, I’m switching out a lot of my tabletop and decor. I will be making pitchers of Aperol Spritzes in this seagrass-wrapped pitcher and serving them in matching glasses. My desk deserves a lamp upgrade, and this one from Williams Sonoma gives me Ralph Lauren in the Hamptons vibes. I am obsessed with Mercedes Salazar’s home collection for Moda Operandi, including this raffia candelabra adorned with adorable fruits. My personal favorite is mangos, but there are plenty of others to choose from.
Finally, because it’s summer, don’t forget to throw on a straw hat. Your skin will thank you!
