Trench coats have been fashionable forever, whether Humphrey Bogart is skulking around with the collar turned up or Audrey Hepburn nonchalantly throws one on over her cigarette pants. They’re elegant but utilitarian, keep your clothes dry, and you can wear them forever. What’s not to love?
Let’s start with what everyone’s thinking: Burberry. Their Kensington Heritage trench is iconic for a good reason. It goes with everything, it will last you for years, and if you’re going to invest in a piece it’s your best option. But that doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune for a great trench coat. J.Crew never lets us down, and their Icon Trench comes in at $228. All of the style for a lot less money is always a win in our book. Everlane’s trench comes in even lower, at $148.
There are plenty of classics to choose from, but this season there are also designer putting their own unique spin on the silhouette. British designer RAINS is making fresh, fun trench coats at an affordable price point that makes them extremely hard to resist. Two of our favorites this season are their yellow cheetah print , which is a perfect statement piece. A slightly more subtle choice, but still insanely cool, would be their high-gloss trench in a trendy camel color. If you’re looking for a pattern that’s a little more toned-down, Anine Bing’s London jacket keeps the classic silhouette with an updated plaid that’s right on-trend.
Finally, for a major trench moment, Club Monaco’s swingy, oversized trench in an olive-y brown is just about the chicest thing we’ve ever seen. It’s a little bit of an investment, but we think it’s special enough to justify the price tag.
