Mules have been everywhere lately. You can thank Alessandro Michele, who revived Gucci a few years ago when he took over as creative director and rolled out the classic horsebit buckle in a variety of fun, unexpected colors. Mules (we’re talking about the flat kind) came back with a vengeance. And unlike Manolo Blahnik’s 80s take on the silhouette, these flat shoes are so comfortable it’s like getting away with wearing slippers as real shoes.
The shoe has a certain sense of elegance about it, whether you’re talking about the classic Gucci or something a little more out there like this red and white polka dotted pair by Malone Souliers. They look picture perfect with jeans or any sort of trouser. Have any garden parties or summer BBQs on the horizon? What about this preppy pair by J.Crew? I’m always a sucker for seersucker (see what I did there?), especially when the sun’s out. Maybe you have a trip planned this summer, lucky you. The mule is here to make sure you’re comfortable enough when you’re sightseeing or walking around during the day, but still sophisticated enough for a long dinner once the sun goes down.
Much like the animal after which it’s named, mules are quite the workhorse to have stashed away in your closet. So what are you waiting for?
