We’re not sure when it happened, but all of a sudden puffer coats are chic again. In fact, they’re so in that major design houses like Balenciaga are pumping out down coats next to their luxury leather goods. The new puffer is cropped and extra puffy, or long and surprisingly elegant. Bonus points for a fun color or unexpected pattern. The bottom line? We’re way past North Face here.
The most popular puffy take is a streamlined version in a luxe neutral, like a khaki, olive, or cream. Not surprising when you consider that those have been the dominant colors of the last few seasons. As an added perk of the established trend, you can grab a coat at any price point. H&M has so many affordable, great-looking coats right now, but this padded jacket with a hood might be our favorite. Their oversized version with cinching at the waist and the neck comes in a close second.
Maybe you want a solid, but you’re looking for something with a little more oomph. Tory Sport has a zippy red jacket that will keep all eyes on you. Mango’s violet coat with an exaggerated collar makes a big statement for the price. Blank Denim’s snake print jacket is somewhere in between a neutral and a pattern, which we obviously love.
One of our favorite brands making puffer coats is Farm Rio, which is great if you have a weakness for any bright colors or fun patterns. Their Borgodo jacket is covered with tropical inspired, colorful prints AND it’s reversible. Black on one side, and maroon on the other. Their Mystic jacket is a little less busy, but still has plenty of personality thanks to its mystical motif. And yes, that’s reversible too.
If you’re looking to splurge, look no further than Saks Potts. Their short, puffy jacket comes in a bright pink, which isn’t even the best thing about it. Thanks to the shawl collar and belted waist, you’ll have a cinched silhouette underneath all those layers of down.
