Listen, there’s nothing we love more than turtlenecks. People use the word ‘obsessed’ pretty liberally these days, but there’s no other way that adequately describes our love affair with this season’s It Knit. The turtleneck is many things – sexy but comfortable, chic but effortless, unabashedly feminine or appealingly androgynous. It can be thin and ribbed or chunky and hand-knit.
With fashion turning back towards luxe minimalism and elevated basics, it’s no wonder that everyone is gravitating back to the turtleneck. There are a few different kinds, so let’s start with the thinner kind that can essentially be styled like you would your favorite t-shirt.
You can’t go wrong with J.Crew. Their tissue turtleneck is thin enough for layering later when the weather gets even colder, but perfect to wear alone right now when we’re still riding a fall fashion high. Their everyday cashmere turtleneck also comes in any color you can dream of, plus they offer monogramming. A cashmere monogrammed turtleneck? That feels rich, even if it doesn’t cost you that much.
We love big ribbed sweaters, and the Disa sweater from Acne Studios is the perfect example. The displaced sleeves and long length are peak cozy, and the slits at the side create a more flattering line instead of just bulking you out. We love this 70’s inspired rust-colored one from Naadam, too.
Raey is a luxury basics brand we can’t stop talking about. One of Matches Fashions in-house private labels, the brand is designed and created in London. They made a sweater that is so perfect, one of our editors has been lusting after it for over a year. It is long enough to still be long on a tall woman, and structured enough that its slouchy silhouette reads as polished instead of sloppy. It comes in four neutrals – oatmeal, navy, black, and gray. It is quite literally perfect. The only problem? The price tag. But this is a sweater that will make your jeans look top-tier, and if you style it out with a midi-leather skirt and some knee-high boots you will look full-blown editorial.
