Something strange is afoot. Please keep reading even though I just made a bad pun. But back to the something lurking around the edge of fashion consciousness – our feet are getting practical. And sometimes downright ugly. That’s right – Birkenstocks have been back ever since Phoebe Philo at Celine blew us all away with her chic normcore collections. And now, Tevas are the newest ugly duckling to turn into a beautiful fashion-y swan.
Tevas and Birkenstocks are the latest trend to be adopted by the fashion crowd, despite its decidedly un-glamorous associations. The flatform versions are perfect for a hot summer’s night when you can’t bear the thought of buckling into this season’s strappy sky-high sandals. The flat, original iteration favored by hippies and fashionistas alike works just as well for running errands as it does put a final exclamation point on your metaphorical sentence/outfit. Inspired by an image of Glossier founder Emily Weiss’s Chanel Tevas, (here is this years version,) we’ve been scouring the internet for the most unexpected high/low of all time all season, waiting for the weather to warm up.
And how do you wear this trend? For me, it’s all about contrast. The comfort and sportiness of the ugly sandal is particularly compelling when paired when a ladylike, vibrant dress. If that’s a little too far out of your comfort zone, then you can always just throw them on with jeans and a t-shirt.
