Every year when summer turns to fall, it’s time to bring back the long sleeved shirts and layering pieces we said goodbye to at the end of last spring. Consider this your guide to the 2024 fall essentials you need to start the season of fully stocked and ready.
Long sleeve tees don’t get as much love as short sleeves. Maybe because they’re more of a supporting player? A long sleeve t-shirt is in service of layering, or plays second fiddle to your favorite blazer or lets your favorite jeans really shine. Here are a few I love: rag & bone’s crewneck, Splendid’s 1×1, J.Crew’s vintage-inspired tee in a fun color like a buttery yellow.
Or maybe it’s because sweaters become the new t-shirts in fall. Don’t overthink it. Quince’s $50 cashmere crewneck or J.Crew’s classic-fit sweater (which comes in a million colors) are both excellent, affordable ways to stock up on basics. And don’t forget a blazer! Whether something more fitted and slim-cut like this Banana Republic blazer or a bit roomier like this Kobi Halperin, it’s a sleek finishing touch that really finishes everything off.
I know I’m always talking about white shirts, but I believe they are the most versatile piece of clothing in any closet. I probably have four or five that all serve different purposes. I’m not suggesting you need that many, but a shorter cotton shirt for layering and a longer Oxford for colder days should have you set up.
Loafers are the smart older sister of the Mary-Jane flat. A little bit heavier, a little bit more formal, but just as classic. A good day to mix it up? Pick a pair in an unexpected color, like these red tasseled loafers from J.Crew. Crank up the shine with some patent leather loafers from Paris Texas, which reminds of the Row’s beloved eel shoes.
