It’s that time of winter when, in certain parts of the country, you have to be really prepared to leave the house. It’s about fashion as function – the function being you don’t freeze your butt off. Below, we have our five essentials for staying stylish this winter.
Consider these the building blocks of your cold weather wardrobe. A puffer coat is a great way to add instant style to your daily routine. In fact, it basically becomes your outfit in winter. I like a statement-y option that works with just about anything, like this Aritzia super-puff in a rich olive, or Banana Republic’s chocolate brown puffer with a fun collar flourish.
Long sleeve t-shirts are a bit of an underrated staple. Short sleeves get all the glory, and then often I think of my sweaters as my “long sleeve t-shirts”. J.Crew’s jersey shirt, Quince’s cotton slub tee, and La Ligne’s vintage-inspired tee are all fantastic. They’re not too clingy or boxy. You can layer them easily under a blazer or sweater without bulky lines. And layering is the key to survival in winter!
You don’t have to spend a lot of money to get a great cashmere sweater anymore. Don’t overthink it! As always, I love the full rainbow of color offerings in J.Crew’s classic crewneck. For something more cropped, Quince’s baby crewneck is slightly more cropped. Their fisherman sweater is similar to Jenni Kayne’s (more expensive) one, at a fraction of the price.
My favorite pair of jeans is always going to be a more vintage-inspired straight pair with some rigidity, like this Frame pair. But you could get a little trendier with a barrel leg pair from Madewell, or a wide-leg trouser jean from J.Crew. Throw on a chunky pair of Chelsea boots that will stand up to any weather. Sam Edelman’s laguna boot or Patricia Green’s slightly shorter pair can you get you through rain, shine, or slush.
