When you have a truly great coat, you always look stylish. It’s one of my favorite parts about winter. You could be wearing your rattiest sweatpants or your sharpest trousers, because your outfit is really the coat. Just throw on a cashmere scarf, your favorite boots, and you’ll be best dressed.
If you’re like me, you already have a black coat you bought years ago and still love. If you don’t, invest in a really good one, like this Veronica Beard Stryder coat. But don’t be afraid to switch it up! It’s no secret that this season, we’re all coocoo for cocoa brown. It’s elegant, easy to style, and feels a lot fresher, like this Alex Eagle x J.Crew overcoat or this Mango wrap coat with a gorgeous dramatic collar.
Personally, I like my coats a little oversized. You can throw it on over any sweater or blazer, and there’s a certain borrowed from the boys charm when it has some of those classic menswear tailoring details. I love this Mango double-breasted wool coat in a textured brown that goes with everything. J.Crew’s Vivienne topcoat is a more structured version, with sharp shoulders and fun pockets in a cool but classic grey.
Or you could pick a coat with really excellent, fun details. The built-in scarf trend isn’t going anywhere, and I love Mint Velvet’s burgundy version. It’s the easiest way to look effortlessly chic, because it really is that easy to put it on and toss the scarf over your shoulder!
An easy way to really make a statement with your coat? Go for a really unexpected color! I love this Banana Republic wrap coat in a vibrant sky blue. It’s made from Italian wool and cashmere, too, so it’ll feel like you’re wrapped in a cloud. Boden clothing always has a preppy, colorful lens, and this pastel gingham coat is an absolute showstopper.
