Denim is one of the biggest trends right now, especially rocking a full double denim look. My version is a little bit different from the street style ones out there because I still want it to feel like me! I love breaking up the Canadian tuxedo with a peek of a white shirt or a fun scarf, and it’s easy to layer on an extra jacket or blazer.
First, let’s establish the denim pieces. There are a million classic chambray shirts out there, but one of my favorites is trusty old J.Crew’s. Frank & Eileen’s Eileen’s silhouette is another classic, splurgier option. If you want something a little more oversized and trendier, Everlane’s shirt jacket piece capitalizes on the utilitarian trend and Mother Denim’s more minimalist shirt is another great one. I love the drama of a fit-and-flare jacket, like this Me + Em Cargo Jacket or this statement jacket from Veronica Beard.
When it comes to the denim, I like going for a slightly darker wash so it’s not all the same shade. In terms of fit I’m usually drawn to a wider or straighter leg as opposed to a straight up skinny, like these Banana Republic Ranger jeans or Everlane’s high-waisted pair. I really love the cropped flare of these Veronica Beard jeans. For a more polished look, J.Crew’s trouser dark-wash trouser jean definitely feels dressy.
Finally, a few final touches to make it feel fashion-y. I love layering with a striped t-shirt, like Everlane’s thick navy-and-white stripe , J.Crew’s thinner baby-blue-and-white one, or Alex Mill’s more contemporary white-and-black version. Throw on a brown belt and a pair of loafers and you’ll be ready to go.
