As we dive headfirst into fall, and more importantly sweater season, it’s time to take a moment to talk about the cardigan. Ever since the cardigan came back a few seasons ago, it’s come quite a way from hanging in your grandmother’s closet. It can be oversized, extra-long, slightly cropped, or classic twin-set – which makes it just about as versatile as sweaters can be. Stock up on the slimmer cotton sweaters now, and get an extra-cozy wool one for later.
I’m partial to a chunkier cardigan, especially over a favorite white t-shirt and stacks of jewelry. COS’s ribbed, dark green sweater feels like an unexpected twist to the usual navy or black. Ann Taylor’s lavender, boyfriend-inspired ribbed cardigan gives you texture and a longer length. Jenni Kayne’s cashmere cocoon cardigan is so comfy and cozy that it actually lives up to the name. Snag one for yourself in either navy or a lighter cotton one in black.
Feeling a little bit funkier? Go for a cardigan with a little more punch, like this pink fruit-punch colored relaxed sweater from J.Crew. If you’re looking for a print, this Maje jacquard bow-print cardigan is very, very good. And of course, you can always go for a classic large-scale leopard print. This color-blocked cashmere cardi from COS gives you the perfect pop of yellow, while grounding it in cream and charcoal.
Let’s play around with length. For a slightly more cropped fit, Banana Republic’s cashmere/merino blend top hits right at the waist. It even comes in a petite size for all the shorter ladies out there. On the other side of things, let’s go extra-long. Mango’s open-knit cardigan has a more boho vibe, but the oatmeal color keeps it from feeling too relaxed. COS’s oversized light gray cardigan is perfect for throwing on over jeans.
