This holiday party season, we’re all about a little bit of casual drama. It’s our own spin on statement dressing. Don’t wait to wear the good stuff! It’s all about taking our favorite party tops – slouchy sequined blouses, feathered cardigans, velvety shirts – and dressing them down a bit so we don’t have to wait for a party to wear them! Consider it a different kind of high/low mixture.
Let’s start with the easiest piece to wear: a J.Crew t-shirt. How often do you wear a striped t-shirt? How about one covered in clear paillettes for a more subtle take on sequins? A black fitted turtleneck is something I wear all the time, and this sequined version would look especially good with boyfriend jeans and a ballet flat.
You can add texture in other ways, like feathers. It feels unexpected and fun, especially when it’s just a touch. There are levels to the feathers like everything else. For just a touch, there’s this black long-sleeve t-shirt with a feather trim. In the middle, this cropped black cardigan with a swoosh of feathers across the front. Finally, go full-on with this J.Crew Collection shirt that’s covered all over. The white color keeps it toned down and easy to style.
Perhaps this is the most extra option, but there’s something about a fully sequined shirt that’s just so FUN. The shirts tend to slink and slouch and move in a way that’s really sexy but can also be casual. Look at this ice blue Anthropologie shirt – you could wear it with track pants and it would look good! J.Crew’s gold blouse is more of a classic fit but just as wearable, and there’s a navy version that’s a little more subtle.
