When it comes to fashion, America may not have contributed as much as France or Italy, but we certainly did one thing right: denim. Think of it as cowboy couture, and one of the most iconic creations in fashion history. Denim shirts, denim jeans, denim jackets – it’s all comfortable, unpretentious, affordable, and flattering. No wonder we’re so into chambray shirts right now.
Chambray shirts are perfect for this awkward in-between seasons time. You can wear them as their own shirt, or even unbuttoned over a white t-shirt that’s perfect for hot days and cooler nights. It’s not all just rough and tumble cowboy vibes, either. Like always with denim, whether it’s a shirt or a pair of pants, it’s about your personal style.
The classic chambray shirt like this one from Gap, definitely has some Western details like front shirt pockets and snap buttons. I also love this one from J.Crew in a vintage-y indigo color, which reminds me of a vintage Ralph Lauren ad. But it’s just as easy to get a fitted, more ladylike option like this one. A slight crop and tie at the waist, plus styling it with a popped collar, makes the Astrid shirt from J.MacLaughlin feel equal parts feminine and preppy.
You know I love a slightly oversized fit, and this light-wash shirt from AYR fits the bill. Aptly named The Big Boy, the cozy fabric and fit is perfect hang out at home wear, but can be transformed into something pretty professional with a black pant. Madewell’s version is called the Classic Ex-Boyfriend, and it perfectly combines the oversized feel with Western details like pockets and snap closures.
There’s also plenty of room for trendy details, if you’re looking for a little extra flourish. The dark wash and flounce sleeve on this blouse mean that yeah, it’s stylish, but it’s also super flattering. The ruffles on the shoulder of this one from Bloomingdale’s give the shirt a romantic, but current, edge.
