I know there’s nothing groundbreaking about dark brown for fall, but this year it’s feeling particularly fresh. It’s more unexpected than black, a little more serious than navy, and mixes perfectly with any other neutrals you already have in your closet. I guess you could say I’m coocoo for cocoa clothes right now.
Sometime last year I started swapping out some of my black basics for brown ones. These Ponte pants from Banana Republic easily go with your favorite white tees. How about these velveteen wide-leg pants and your most worn-in button down? A cozy sweater to wear with beat up jeans? This Jenni Kayne cropped cardigan is great to throw over a white t-shirt when you need to start layering.
Of course, sometimes you’re looking for something a little more special. In a world of little black dresses, what if you reached for this showstopper of a brown Jonathan Simkhai dress? Instead of your most trusted black blazer, stand out in the crowd in this heirloom-worthy Frame suede blazer or J.Crew’s pinstripe wool blazer. Speaking of heirlooms, this oversized leather jacket from Veronica Beard will be stylish in every decade. Look at those lapels!
Look at this incredibly lush long coat from Banana Republic. I want to wrap myself in it like a blanket and wear it everywhere! It will make any outfit into a statement – even if you’re just throwing it over your leggings when you’re running your morning errands. All of the brown outerwear right now is really good. Look at this wool jacket with an attached scarf from Quince! Or their leather motorcycle jacket! By now, you know the barn jacket is one of the dominant trends of the season. Throw on this Mango waxed-cotton version!
And don’t forget shoes! Knee-high suede boots or rag & bone’s suede loafer will make any outfit – without breaking the bank.
