I’m saying goodbye to my cashmere sweaters, and swapping them out for lighter weight cotton ones. A cotton sweater is a necessity for spring afternoons now, and summer evenings later. I rounded up my favorite ones so you can keep it warm while looking cool. From colorful, cheery options to classic neutrals, we’ve got you covered.
There’s something so American and 90s about a classic cotton sweater. It makes me think of vintage J.Crew and Gap, and luckily these brands are back on the rise with modern classics. Gap’s split hem sweater adds swing and movement, and the deep navy hue would look excellent with white jeans all summer long. Jenni Kayne’s extra-oversized, cocoon-y cream sweater is the stuff Nancy Meyers movies are made of. And if you’re looking for a slightly shrunken version, then Quince’s cropped sweater is the one for you.
A fisherman’s sweater for summer has ribbing that adds texture and visual interest to any outfit. I love the relaxed fit of J.Crew’s version, and especially love all the colors it comes in. This pale peony pink is a favorite, as is this warm peachy shade. You can wear Alex Mill’s button back cardigan backwards or forwards, and the cheery French blue color is dreamy. For an extra chunky version, Banana Republic’s drop-sleeve is a perfect transitional piece.
A sweater is also an easy way to inject some color into your wardrobe, like this cornflower blue Frame sweater I’m wearing in the header image. I love the proportions – a puffier sleeve with a shorter length. For the ultimate throw-in-your-beach-bag top, look no further than Mersea’s stretchy, sunny yellow sweater. Named after the Amalfi coast, there’s also a lilac color we love.
