Everybody is talking about skirts this season. And not just the usual trusty silk midi skirts. Call it the Prada effect, but we’re seeing tons of maxi skirts in every possible silhouette and fabric. Ankle length denim skirt? Check. Sophisticated A-line in wool? Check! Black column skirt that reminds me of Carolyn Bessette? Check! Put the pants away for the day and try to give our fall skirts a twirl instead.
There are two silhouettes I’m especially loving: the straight column skirt and the A-line twirler. Let’s start with the column skirt. For me, it doesn’t get any chicer than COS’s black wool column skirt. It truly makes me feel like Carolyn Bessette. The Frankie Shop’s skirt is fantastic also! I’m going to be wearing mine with a cozy cashmere oversized sweater, but a blazer will keep things looking sharp too. If you’re on the shorter side, Pixie Market’s column skirt will fit you with no necessary hemming. To make it a little more casual, switch from a wool fabric to denim like this Mother skirt or this COS one.
Let’s get swinging. In the header image, I’m wearing this twirly ME + EM A-line skirt with my favorite boots. It makes me feel like such a LADY. For the last few years I’ve been so drawn to menswear-inspired pieces it feels downright novel to be in something so femme. COS’s flared wool midi is particularly great for colder climates and there’s even a matching top. J.Crew’s pleated midi has a fancy, festive feeling to me – perfect for date nights with a cute top and sensible heel.
And then there are a few in-betweeners, like J.Crew’s bestselling Gwyneth silky midi in a decidedly sexy midnight shade. Speaking of Gwyneth, leave it to Goop to have a fantastic skirt. This G.Label a-line skirt is in navy, and the kicky A-line is set off by a slit and center pleat to keep things from getting too frumpy.
