Once upon a holiday season there was a lovely Plain Jane. A gal who just refused to let go of her hippie roots and her Whole Earth Catalogue. The photo library of pictures from the past ten annual office Chrismakakwanza party shows Jane wearing the same outfit. Every year the same outfit — long black broomstick skirt and the faux silk peasant blouse she bought during her first trip to Berkeley. Every few years her glasses would be different, but that’s about it. Her colleagues were beginning to notice that Jane, although well regarded and well remunerated for her work, just would not step up and join the fun. We feel kind of sorry for Jane.
If this tale is feeling kind of familiar or cautionary (note: some of us still have those velvet palazzos that only get dragged out when the holiday fruitcake is served) it really is TIME to add some flair. What are you waiting for? A sequin skirt or quilted velvet coat or drop dead perfectly tailored tuxedo jacket send the best message: we are here, we will not be buried in the darkest depths of our closets and we are ready to party like it’s 1999. Aren’t we?
Bring on the baubles, the bangles and the beads.
