A great coat is an outfit all by itself, which is why I hope people don’t take it personally if I leave mine on when I’ve been invited over. And in terms of seasonal coat dressing, right now we’re deep into puffer season. Great for staying warm, not necessarily great for fashion (except for the Moncler/Valentino collab, of course). Transitional jacket is a blanket term for pretty much any kind of coat, from trenches to, well, blanket coats.
Trench coats are having a resurgence, with Riccardo Tisci at Burberry bringing the heritage house to new heights. Extreme Cashmere’s unbelievably indulgent navy cashmere kimono/robe/coat combo is the rare combination of beautiful and cozy, so you can essentially wear pajamas outside the house. A black leather biker jacket will bring a bit of edge to any outfit. A fun quilted or tweed jacket brings an unexpected texture level to your fashion game. A graphic, sporty detail down the back of a jacket makes for a memorable exit.
I have no styling tips, but I will leave you with one piece of advice: don’t be afraid to leave your coat on. These are just that good.
