The lady jacket was one of last year’s biggest trends – and I’m happy to say it’s not going anywhere! I’m still excited to wear mine with jeans and sandals. It strikes the perfect balance between fancy and casual. Consider it the perfect amount of a lady who lunches.
Chanel might have started the lady jacket, but it was J.Crew’s more affordable version really kicked off the most recent trend with a fury. And they really have the varieties to back it up! Whatever flavor you’re in the mood for, they’ve got a great one. During this weird transitional period, I’ve been gravitating towards something lighter, like their sweater weight Navy and white stripe with a subtle-fringe trim? Perfectly 70s gold crochet? A cropped fall stripe? These are not your standard lady jackets. These are statements.
When the fall weather sets in, I’ll want a proper jacket to make layering a bit easier. That means a heavier fabric like tweed or wool instead of cashmere, and I love the clean lines of a collarless coat. It makes layering it over a crewneck t-shirt much easier, too. Mango’s tan coat with sharp shoulders has a military look with utilitarian pockets. On the splurgier side, Veronica Beard has some serious options: this navy coat with a white border or this double breasted plaid number with 80s vibes.
Finally, there’s an impulse to make your jacket neutral-ish. Ignore that impulse. Pick something extra colorful for extra impact. I’m eyeing this cherry red Cinq a Sept option, or J.Crew’s slightly less pricey option. Plus, with an eye towards the holidays, a coat like this could really make an impact on the holiday party circuit.
