The easiest way to class up your summer outfit? Swap out your rubber flip flops for a leather pair. It’s a subtle swap, but really versatile and easy to style. You can wear them with everything from your drawstring pants to a slinky sundress. Shop our favorite of the summer’s hottest trend now.
Since this is a trend report, it’s fun to track where exactly the craze came from. The Row’s Ginza sandal exploded onto the runway a few summers ago. Suddenly every It Girl was wearing the chunky leather flip flop. At almost $1000, it’s practically obscene. Luckily, enough time has passed that there are trickle downs, like this pair of Reformation sandals for $178.
This season’s version is a much more subtle silhouette, with thinner straps and a flat sole. Emme Parsons, every fashion girl’s favorite shoe designer, makes exceptionally high quality shoes that blend into your everyday wardrobe seamlessly. You might have heard about her loafers, but this summer her leather thongs are hitting sidewalks all over the country. I love the rich espresso brown color or the marshmellowy white leather with a striking dark sole. They’re a bit pricier at $500, but they’re higher quality than a lot of the designer shoes being made.
But you don’t have to splash out the big bucks to get in on this trend. There are tons of great options under $200! A.Emery is an up-and-coming brand with a particularly great selection of sandals. I love the cut of their sandals, with a slightly thicker strap. They’re $170 and come in a few colors but I’m partial to the brown. Reformation’s flat sandal is another great option at $128, and the cheery red shade is the perfect pop of color for any summer outfit. On the more natural side of the fashion spectrum, Alex Mill’s tan leather flip flops have a rustic quality that reminds of Mallorca espadrilles.
