Mom jeans used to get a bad rap. Not anymore. Forget about any distant memories you have of Tina Fey and the rest of the SNL women making fun of the high-rise cut. All the cool kids are wearing mom jeans again! Probably because they are universally flattering, bring a bit of edge to any outfit, and can make you stand out in a skinny-jean wearing crowd. Even Victoria Beckham has been rocking the cut.
So what makes a mom jean a mom jean? You’re looking for a pair of pants that are still high rise, but a slightly loose fit and a straight leg. And since they are slightly cropped, it’s also a perfect time to show off a special shoe. This versatile shape is great for dressing up or down, t-shirts or turtlenecks, slippers or sensible heel. My personal favorite iteration of the mom jeans outfit at the moment is a light wash jean with an oversized black turtleneck and classic black ankle boots. Don’t forgot to throw on gold hoops.
And don’t be intimidated – the whole point of this jean is chasing that vintage-Levi, stiff denim flavor. And you know who did it first? You. After all, fashion is cyclical, time is a flat circle, and you can definitely pull off mom jeans.
