August is almost over, but summer doesn’t end the minute September rolls around. There’s an art to layering, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. Between cooler nights and blasting air conditioning, you need to have options! I shopped my favorite blazers, jean jackets, army jackets, and leather jackets from Nordstrom, so you’ll be ready for whatever weather comes your way.
The blazer is something I reach for again and again, but there are so man ways to rock one. I’m wearing my Veronica Beard scuba jacket, which is a great investment piece that never goes out of style. Madewell’s double-breasted blazer is cut a little more relaxed, and A.L.C’s one-button black blazer has just enough stretch. It’s not a bad idea to grab a plaid blazer for when fall really arrives: either Madewell’s or Veronica Beard’s.
A utility jacket is an easy transitional layering piece because it’s so lightweight. Treasure & Bond’s khaki version is really more of a shacket, and I love the straight, modern lines. Closed has a similar one in a linen-and-cotton blend in a dried basil color. If you’re looking for a traditional army jacket, you want the drawstring at the waist for a cinched look. Caslon’s army jacket in classic army green, and the Michael Stars linen jacket both work beautifully.
The jean jacket might not be the most glamorous item in anyone’s closet, but it is one of the most versatile. You can go for a slimmer, cropped version like this AG jacket or a more oversized, menswear-inspired fit like this denim trucker Free People jacket.
A good leather jacket is definitely an investment, but it’s a cornerstone of every stylish woman’s wardrobe. Personally, I like a slightly more cropped, motorcycle version. It adds instant edge to any outfit, like this Club Monaco one or this AllSaints Balfern jacket. Rag & Bone’s version has less hardware and is a little more polished.
