Every year when spring comes around, my closet rotates. One of the first items? I trade in my dark leather bags for something a little lighter. This year, that means tons of natural textures with straw or rattan bags. They bring a little bit of timeless elegance to any outfit, a la retro style icons like Jane Birkin or Jackie O. Whether you’re going for a daily tote or a more structured purse to take out to dinner, you’ll find something in our edit.
Let’s start smaller and work our way up. I don’t know about you, but I’m finally using my fun going out bags again after two years of fanny packs and big totes. Staud’s Jetson bag is exactly my vibe right now: a fun, futuristic shape that’s big enough for day or night. The scarlet leather edging adds a fun pop of color. Tory Burch’s yellow-and-lavender small woven leather bag is the perfect date-night companion. Anthropologie’s almond-shaped woven bag comes with a cute blue-and-white-striped lining.
Clare Vivier’s Pot De Miel bag is a 2022 update to Jane Birkin’s signature accessory. It keeps the fun shape and woven texture, and adds some pretty white pearls for a femme angle. The brand’s Moyen Alice bag adds some whimsy with a giant cream bow, and Pamela Munson’s Mixed Media bag uses thick navy ribbons in the place of handles.
On the larger side of things, I’ve always been a fan of Dragon Diffusion’s totes. Their Triple Jump basket bag is clean, minimalist, and elegant – whether you’re at the beach or at ladies lunch. The Hereu Ventall tote is one of the chicest I’ve ever seen. From the upside-down fan shape to the tan leather to the knotted straps, this is an elevated take on straw. Looking for something a little more rustic? Altuzurra’s leather-trimmed tote feels a little more down to earth, but just as beautiful.
