Yes, it gets hot during the summer. It’s time to ditch the jeans for shorts or lighter linen pants. But that doesn’t mean it’s hot all the time! There are plenty of summer nights when the sun has set and a tank top just isn’t going to cut it. You need summer sweaters. What’s a summer sweater? It’s layerable, it’s a light knit, and it’s utterly essential.
Let’s start with the absolute classics: Ralph Lauren. You can’t get much better than a cable-knit cotton sweater from Polo, and they have them in every color. I love this light gray shade which you can wear all the way through fall, or you can go for a summery white. Banana Republic’s cableknit sweater comes in a v-neck, if that’s your preferred neckline.
Everlane’s cotton crewneck in a egg-yolk yellow-orange is a perfect way to show off your tan. Banana Republic’s pale yellow sweater is another reason yellow is one of my favorite colors when the sun is out. What about a periwinkle blue crewneck for all the time you’ll be spending underneath blue skies?
This 525 sweater with a quarter-zip is a modern classic, and one I’ve been wearing a lot. Take some inspiration from the endlessly elegant French and rock a navy-and-white striped sweater.
A cardigan is sometimes an easier sweater to take on and off, whether you keep it slim or go a little bit chunky. Madewell’s slightly cropped, chunkier cardigan would look amazing with a high-waisted pair of white jeans. Mango’s tweed cardigan keeps things super classy, as does this lavender one. Free People’s printed cardigan is perfect for wrapping up in by a fire pit, ideally roasting s’mores.
