The 8 Pieces All French Women Are Wearing

French women have it all figured out. The always look effortlessly put together, and they always seem to be drinking wine and eating pastries. You won’t find wine or pastries in this article, but you will find seriously stylish pieces that every French women has in her closet. Think of it as a French capsule collection. With these 8 pieces, you know you’ll have the solid foundation for a chic closet, and still have plenty of room to personalize and make it feel like your own.

Jeans: the perfect pair of jeans (usually high-waisted) is the first step towards French style. The French love Levi’s as much as we do, so their classic Wedgie works. We also love a slightly heavier, darker jean that reads fancier. These J.Brand trouser-style jeans are the perfect example.

Black Pants : because there’s nothing easier than throwing on the perfect pair of black pants, a t-shirt, and your favorite shoes. It’s timeless, it’s flattering on everyone, and you don’t even have to think about it. Everlane’s work pant is a great choice, as are these Francoise cotton-twill pants if you want a little more drama.

Scarf : for a little bit of je ne sais quoi, add a neckerchief. If you feel bad about your neck, it’s the most stylish solution you could ask for. Treat yourself to an Hermes scarf without the guilt, thanks to the Real Real.

Blazer: Tailoring is one reason the French always look so polished. Take your jeans and t-shirt to the next level with the perfect blazer in a plaid to keep it this season. This Banana Republic one is double-breasted and beautiful. We also love this (new!) Everlane one if you’re into something a little slouchier.

Trench Coat: A timeless classic that goes with everything, the trench coat is perfect for layering, and cinching at the waist is a good look for everyone. We love Universal Standard’s classic take, at an affordable price point and with inclusive sizing. If you’re looking for something a little heavier Theory’s will take you through winter.

Long-Sleeve T-Shirt: a striped t-shirt might be the most inherently French item on here. WE love the structured boatneck and longer sleeve for fall, which shows off just a little bit of skin. J.Crew’s shirt is pretty perfect.

Midi Skirt : The French don’t shy away from femininity. In fact, they embrace it. Swirl through your fall with a femme midi skirt in a rich neutral. And don’t be afraid to play around with texture. Mango’s cream midi-skirt is on our list, and this chocolate-brown leather skirt is fantastic.

Ankle boots: A black pair of ankle boots that are comfortable enough to do anything in, you want to pick a pair that you’ll never get sick of. You can’t go wrong with Rag & Bone. If you’re feeling wild, take a look at these Balenciaga booties

This one’s extra credit: Chanel ballet flats.
