There are a few wonderful months after the wool and down of winter where all you need is a lovely light jacket. This year, the piece I keep reaching for is my bomber jacket. I love the shape, the versatility, and the fact that it makes me feel cooler than my trench.
When you think of bomber jacket, you’re probably thinking of something that looks a lot like this Alpha Industries jacket. It ticks all the boxes: utilitarian driven design with lots of pockets, a balloon-ish, cropped silhouette, and a more technical fabric. I love the midnight blue shine of this color instead of the usual army green, although & Other Stories light khaki green jacket is a springier take on the shade. Alex Mill has the most fitted, everyday version which works with tailoring or wide-leg jeans.
COS infuses some Phoebe Philo-esque luxury loucheness to their jersey bomber, at a fraction of the price. The creamy color makes it perfect for spring, and I love the way the droopiness of the sleeves looks like high-fashion whipped cream. An absolute confection of a coat! Vince’s cropped bomber jacket has a lot of the same elements, if you’re looking for more of a splurge. Mango’s version feels distinctly fashion-y as well, with more severe minimal lines and a cropped cut. The stiffness of the scuba material and the grey color make it easy to dress up with your favorite trousers.
On the slightly more unusual side of bomber jackets, you can play around with material and colors. The bomber has always been a streetwear staple, and this tangerine orange Alpha Industries version would look electric with navy or your favorite white jeans. A quilted option from Mango has a more English Cotswolds vibe, perfect for your beat up chinos or even your favorite sweats.
