A week or two ago, a TikTok went viral. It was describing what the kids call the “Coastal Grandmother lifestyle”. Inspired by Nancy Meyers, it’s all about chic linen essentials, beautiful beige living rooms, and effortless beach lifestyle. Think Ina Garten, Oprah, or Diane Keaton in Something’s Gotta Give. Just in time for summer, we put together our very own Coastal Grandmother edit so you can live your best life all season long.
It’s time to channel Diane Keaton, and get your monochromatic dressing on. You’re going to need a big, blousy white tunic or button-down for all that heirloom tomato gardening you’ll be doing this summer. Lauren Ralph Lauren’s linen button down, French Connection’s poplin shirt, or Banana Republic’s oversized linen number all do the job nicely. These oversized ones from H&M are such a great price point you don’t have to worry about getting a little dirt on them! J.Crew’s linen beach shirt also does double duty as a swimsuit coverup. Don’t forget a summer sweater for those sunset! Jenni Kayne’s Fisherman cotton sweater is a favorite, as is AYR’s Cool Polo.
We want to keep it just as breezy when it comes to pants. Linen, slouchy, easy – don’t be afraid of the elastic waistband! It’s about to be summer, and we want to keep things comfortable. J.Crew’s wide-leg seaside pant is absolutely perfect, but Madewell’s lightspun tapered pant, Frank & Eileen’s chino, Jenni Kayne’s trouser or AYR’s The Beat white jeans are all slightly sturdier options.
Let’s finish this off with some accessorizing. You’re going to need a goes-with-everything pair of tortoise sunglasses and a sun hat to protect your face during those long, beachy walks. A woven hat like this Madewell one adds texture, but you can go with a more classic white bucket hat a la Diane. Just slip into a pair of leathery brown sandals, like these chic J.Crew thongs, or your trusty Birkenstocks and you’re ready to go!
