Move over, sequins! This season, velvet is making a move for the most festive fabric. And it’s definitely the most comfortable. It’s warm, it’s luxe, and it results in the lounge-y, fancy feeling that all truly great holiday dressing invokes in the wearer. And it doesn’t have to break the bank, which is always a huge plus.
Let’s start off with the crowdpleasers: stuff you will get complimented on at your first holiday party. This season is all abut the matching sets, whether that means a suit or just a two-piece. Mango’s velvet embellished kaftan and matching pants have beading along the sleeves and hems, creating an immediately memorable look that you’ll feel just as good in after the dessert buffet. Anthropologie’s embellished velvet midi skirt in gold will make you stand out in a crowd of navy blues, blacks, and reds. Forte Forte’s glitter kimono jacket is definitely a splurge, but it’s a look that will still be relevant years from now. Dress it up with matching pants, or just throw it on with your favorite pair of boyfriend jeans.
As for the go-to, velvet pants are one of our favorites. J.Crew’s pull-on pants are just as good for lounging around the house as they are out and about for dinner. Only Hearts’s pull-on ribbed pants are the dressier version of your favorite pajama pants.
Looking for something a little off the beaten sartorial path? It’s been a big year for hair accessories. Specifically, hatbands. Ever since Princess Kate started wearing them to her official duties, the hybrid hat/headband has been everywhere. We love the regal vibe it gives to any outfit, and it’s such a fun way to dress up your go-to little black dress. This braided one from & Other Stories is the perfect first step. You could also always go classic with a bow, like this one from J.Crew.]
