Hippie fashion is having a moment. First there was the tie-dye trend, and now there’s peasant tops. The old favorite seems to be popping up everywhere. And we couldn’t be more excited. These easy, breezy tops are comfortable, forgiving and perfect for all of the hot days and nights coming up.
What is a peasant top exactly? While for us they might conjure up the Summer of Love, they actually have a strong presence across a variety of cultures. Eastern Europe, Mexico, and the Caribbean all have their own versions and influences, with elaborate embroidery often making an appearance. The decoration may change, but all versions share a similar silhouette. There’s usually a wide neck, puffed sleeves of some sort, and either elastic or smocking at the waist, neckline, or wrists.
Some of our favorites? This denim Madewell popover isn’t exactly what you might think of when it comes to peasant tops, but that’s why we like it. Lucky Brand has a great beige linen option, for those of you who can’t get enough of the neutral trend. And if you’re craving a little bit of color, look no further than Anthropologie. Their sunny yellow top would brighten your day.
