December is here, and to celebrate I’m making a statement. Several sartorial statements, actually. Think statement coats, dresses, sweaters – anything that feels like you’re in an Outfit by simply putting it on. After a very quiet holidays last year, I’m embracing a more maximalist attitude. More champagne, more gifts, and more sequins on my clothes.
Statement tops might seem intimidating, but they actually make getting dressed easy! You just need your go-to bottoms and a more muted shoe to balance out the fabulousness of the top and voila, you’re dressed! This Alice + Olivia tinsel jacket would look amazing with black pants, and I get compliments every time I wear this Tory Burch intarsia knit wool sweater.
For a sleeker attempt at sequins, this Free People silver shirt goes with practically everything and I love the bold black and white stripes on this Tory Burch shirt. Velvet is always an easy way to up the glamour in any outfit, especially with the rust-colored, swingy shape of this Anthropologie jacket or the unusual lilac color of this puff-sleeved blouse. Finally, this Alice + Olivia poodle print shirt is absolutely adorable, and works well in everyday, too!
Statement Shoes
Adding a printed or glittery shoe instantly turns your jeans and t-shirts into something to get excited about. It can be as simple as these silver-and-black polka dotted Tory Burch flats, as classic as a pair of leopard-print booties, or as luxurious as purple silk Manolo Blahniks with a bejeweled brooch that Carrie Bradshaw would love.
Banana Republic’s plaid puffer is extra-long and extra-festive, perfect for slipping in and out of at various holiday parties. This Free People shaggy lavender coat looks like the 70s had a baby with a Muppet, and would look good with just about anything.
When in doubt, go for animal print – like this Frances Valentine faux free leopard print coat or this Norma Kamali tiger print sleeping bag coat. A statement coat doesn’t have to be busy, necessarily. This River Island large-scale black and white checkered coat is sleek, neutral, and minimalist.
