It doesn’t matter how many September fashion magazines I buy, I can’t make it cold enough in LA to wear coats and boots. So until the temperatures finally drop, it’s all about transitional dressing. I’m shopping smarter, not more, with pieces that do double duty now and later. So here’s my list of what I’m loving for September:
Shirtdress/Kimono
The most versatile piece in my wardrobe right now, I’ve been wearing a lot of shirt dresses in the LA heat. When it gets cooler, I’m going to wear them unbuttoned over jeans and a t-shirt. I love the pattern and length of this one from Anthro, the animal print of this one, and this pretty, pale kimono.
Sweater
Who doesn’t love a sweater? This oatmeal, fringed sweater is seriously luxe. A cream wrap sweater will go with anything. The saturated shade of this mustard cardigan will roll over to fall perfectly.
Denim Shirt
I love a Canadian Tuxedo look all year round, but there’s something especially great about it in fall. I’m going to freshen it up this year with some new details, like some feminine ruffles along the cuffs and buttons. I love this one from Frame, which is on mega sale, and this Anthropolgie option.
Clogs
My obsession with comfy shoes has shifted from sporty sandals to clogs. They’ll look great right now with a dress or khakis, and later with jeans and corduroys. Everlane’s saddle brown pair is high on my list, and Madewell’s suede ones are great too.
Highlighter
I’m ready for the temperatures to drop, but I am not ready to give up my sun-kissed glow. The best way to fake it through fall? A highlighter. I’ve been using the Westman Atelier highlighter, and the sun-touched Kjaer Weis is a favorite too.
Wide-Leg Pant
Tight pants are not in the cards for me right now, but I need a little more polish than sweatpants. Enter wide-leg jeans! I get the movement and breeze, but still feel put-together. I’m obsessed with these Ralph Lauren khaki pants, and this pair of Jenni Kayne pants.
Sneakers
Give your sneakers a seasonal update by swapping out bright white palettes to something a little more autumnal. A camo pair from Golden Goose, multi-colored Air Max’s from Nike, or a Tory Burch navy and red pair.
Jacket
It’s so close to jacket-time, with the chill in the air at night. I’m relying on light, utilitarian pieces with fun features like military-inspired details or an interesting fabric. I love this quilted number, this canvas one, and this splurge-worthy army jacket.
