Everybody has a ritual when the new year starts. For me, after a season of sparkles and champagne, I revert back to basics. Back to working out, staying in, and wearing my trusty white button down most days. Below, shop the shirts that I reach for most mornings.
I burn through white shirts pretty fast, so I’m always on the lookout for a shirt at a more affordable price point. Luckily, the classic American mall brands are turning out better basics than ever. Maybe it’s the magic touch of Zac Posen, but Gap has slowly crept to the top of my list. Their iconic Big Shirt is a great layering piece in either a heavier oxford or lightweight poplin. J.Crew’s french-inspired Etienne shirt is a perfectly proportioned borrowed-from-the-boys MVP.
Yes, I’m guilty of gravitating towards slightly bigger cuts, but we pulled some fitted pieces too. After all, sometimes you just want a shirt you can easily tuck in. Banana Republic’s Riley shirt, Gap’s Classic Shirt, and Mango’s everyday fit shirt will all do the trick.
If you, unlike me, can be trusted award open pens or morning coffee cups, a really special white shirt is a perfect investment piece. Recently, I’ve been really into TWP. The brand is known for their exceptional tailoring, so it’s no surprise their shirts stand out from the crowd. Their Boyfriend shirt is relaxed but not oversized which can feel hard to find these days. For a more romantic spin, their Possetti top comes in a superfine, almost gauzy cotton with delicate pleating at the back.
Toteme is known for their understated, sleek versions of classic pieces. I love their white-on-white striped button down, which adds just the right amount of interest.
