In winter, it can be easy to cocoon yourself in swaths of cozy neutrals. Day after day I end up reaching for my favorite well-worn black cashmere crewneck and trousers. Winter stripes are a great way to break out of this rut. They’re timeless, easy-to-wear, and easier to shop for than ever with our edit.
Stripes can feel a little summery at times, so why not lean into that vibe with a wintry white knit? Bonus: you can wear it now, and then rock it later during a chilly beach night. Kule, a brand built on the preppy sportiness of stripes, has a fantastic quarter zip sweater you’ll want to burrow in all year long. Simkhai does cutting edge stripes with a mix-matched, avant-garde version in this chic navy-and-white cardigan or a seriously chunky gray and white turtleneck.
Speaking of sporty, COS’s rugby polo is a more interesting option than your usual sweatshirts. I love it with everything from wrap skirts to slouchy jeans to more polished tailoring. Gap’s slim-fit tee or Fairfax’s femme polo-inspired collared top are other pieces that are a little more interesting than your usual white tees. I love the tiny buttons on Veronica Beard’s knit henley, which is a lovely little feminine detail.
I’ve been obsessed with chocolate brown this season, even if it’s just small little touches like this baby blue and brown striped sweater from La Ligne. The unexpected combo feels totally brand new and properly wintry, when a more nautical stripe can lean summery. In fact, La Ligne can always be counted on for fun and fresh takes on the stripe, like this rainbow stripe Lean Lines sweater or the cult-favorite Bastien quarter-zip. I love the swinging wide sleeve of their Breton tee, too.
