After a season of sparkles, indulgences, and a little too much champagne, I’m ready to get back to the basics. January is a month of laying low and my winter wardrobe reflects that. I want to be comfortable and casual, but still pulled together thanks to elegant basics. Think cozy cashmere, fresh t-shirts, and my favorite pair of jeans. After all, the less time you spend thinking about getting dressed, the more time you have to tackle putting away your holiday decorations.
The number one closet clean out ritual I have in January? Going through my t-shirts and getting rid of the ones that are dingy, stretched out, or hole-y. Starting the year of with crisp, new tees just feels right. I’ve been very into Michael Stars again, and their white long-sleeve thermal tee is on heavy rotation. James Perse’s slub-cotton tee is another standby.
When it comes to sweaters, J.Crew’s cashmere crewneck comes in tons of colors and you can practically wear them like t-shirts in the winter months. I love adding a little monogram on the sleeve for that extra touch. But if you’re looking for something a little more specific, a cashmere polo sweater or rollneck are anything but basic.
One new pair of jeans can make everyday dressing feel fabulous again. For me, I’m leaning into a slouchier jean like this mid-rise Rag and Bone pair in a classic indigo wash. I love how it feels cool with sneakers or stilettos! Or, you can finally jump on the bootcut train with MOTHER’s iconic Weekender jeans, a cropped fashionable flare.
Lately, after years of rocking Nikes I’ve caught Samba fever. I love how sleek the low profile is, and how polished and minimal the lines are. You can really wear it almost the same way you would a loafer or ballet flat. But sometimes you need a sportier shoe! I get it. The On Cloud sneaker seems to be that perfect mix of fashion and tech, with models rocking them for their off-duty style as often as dads at your local coffee shop.
Finally: a coat! Don’t overthink it. Get a puffer coat with modern proportions in a solid color, and you’ll always look pulled together. I love Everlane’s ReNew coat in black or olive, and COS’s recycled down longer version is sleek too.
