In one of those “everything old is new again” moments, the denim maxi skirt is back in a big way. From the runways to the street style blogs, the transitional piece is making a great argument for investing in a new one this time around. You can wear it with a big chunky sweater and boots, your favorite copped lady jacket, or even a beloved belted blazer.
If you’re worried that a long denim skirt might feel a little too Sister Wives-y, then a slit up the front can show a little bit of skin. A slit + a shorter length keeps it feeling a little more fresh, like this calf-length AQUA denim skirt. I love Madewell’s deep indigo pinewell wash, which is perfect for the colder months ahead. You can always count on Frame for killer denim. Their Midaxi denim skirt is just as advertised – somewhere in between a midi and a maxi, and all the way wearable.
A light-wash skirt in winter might seem counterintuitive, but I love the look of it with rich textures like cashmere sweaters and leather boots. Rag & Bone’s featherweight skirt is a straight column that goes all the way down to the floor. It will look especially great with your highest heels. Pilcro’s ankle-length skirt has a frayed denim hem that adds a little edge to the more conservative shape. And of course, if light blue is too light, there’s always black. A black denim skirt might feel a little easier to style than a deep indigo, especially when it’s as pretty as this pencil-shape skirt from Madewell.
Raey has become one of my favorite brands for their conservative-but-chic, slouchy-but-sexy silhouettes. This panelled skirt has just enough twirl and a great swingy shape to make it feel special from so many of the pencil skirts out there. Free People’s version is more of a classic a-line, but I love the wash.
