Every year, I tell myself I’m going to read more. With plenty of long winter nights ahead, it’s the perfect time to dive into a really great read. We put together a list of your next favorite books and readers that will make your next night in a cozy success.
Here are a few books I’m most excited about digging into. I’ve been hearing a lot of great things about Alan Hollingsworth’s Our Evenings. A look at one Burmese actor’s life in London from 1960 onwards, it’s a sweeping but still intimate novel that’s been on every ‘Best of’ list this year. I would pair it with these bookish, intellectual tortoiseshell frames from CADDIS. Or these slightly more serious glasses from Plymouth.
Reese’s book club picks can be hit or miss for me, but I’m really intrigued by her latest pick: City of Night Birds. Set in the punishing world of Russian ballet, one prima ballerina returns to St. Petersburg for the first time in two years after a tragic accident. And of course, there are dashing male dancers and the pressures of performing. Instead of ballet slippers, put on these pale pink readers.
If you don’t have any vacations in January, I suggest some armchair travel through Andre Aciman’s fabulous memoir My Roman Year. Pour yourself a Campari spritz and lose yourself in his captivating prose as he takes you through the hidden corners, glamorous people, and delicious food of Rome. These steel gray cat-eye frames have just the right amount of Dolce Vita glamour, too.
You might have heard of Miranda July, but she’s in rare form in All Fours, her latest novel. Someone told me it was the “first great perimenopausal novel”, which was all it took for me to order it. It’s a funny, unique look at the creative and sexual interior life of a famous artist. Give yourself some readers as weird and wonderful as the story, like these marble-y blue Eyebobs glasses or these Caddis blue-and-tortoiseshell frames.
