In winter, a great cloth coat means you’ll always have a great outfit. Even if underneath, you’re wearing your favorite sweatpants. It’s a miracle how expensive a little bit of tailoring and a great color can make you look. Below, our favorite cloth coats for the season.
When it comes to investment pieces, black is always a safe bet. In the header image, I’m wearing Goop’s deliciously luxurious double-breasted overcoat. I love the formality of the double-breasted tailoring with buttons. You can easily wear this out over a silky dress and heels, or toss it over a t-shirt and sweats during a chilly morning. The wool-cashmere blend is heavy and hangs (past the knees) in just the right way!
It’s not necessarily practical in LA, but I do think a calf (or longer) length coat is an incredibly glamorous, romantic thing. Not to mention if you live in a cold climate, it will actually keep you warm! The way it swishes as you walk, the dramatic reveal of your outfit when you take it off – that’s style, baby. Mango’s oatmeal double breasted coat with a dramatic collar, Banana Republic’s wool-and-cashmere wrap coat, or Jenni Kayne’s rich espresso tailoring-inspired overcoat are all excellent examples.
If you don’t have one of Ralph Lauren’s iconic Polo Coats, you can start with this Lauren Ralph Lauren Reefer coat at a fraction of the price. The trademark Ralph Lauren details are all there: sharp shoulders, vintage sensibility, and military-inspired pockets.
A coat is also an easy way to wear more color. Look at the pale pink shade of this Sezane coat, which would perk up any dreary winter day. The bright cherry red color of J.Crew’s Palais topcoat is a knockout.
