When done right, crochet can feel summery and elevated, not just like a summer camp arts and craft project. This season, it seems like everyone is doing it right, with slinky dresses and breezy tops that take you from the beach to drinks in the blink of an eye.
Yes, crochet can feel revealing. That’s why I like to wear it as conservatively as possible, like a long sleeve and maxi dress silhouette. It’s perfect for a very chic bathing suit cover up. For a dress like the one in the header image, try this DISSH dress. This Banana Republic dress is sleeveless but the knit is much tighter, meaning no see-through moments here! I think it’d be very elevated and elegant with a minimalist sandal and your favorite gold chunky bangles.
It’s also easy to wear a crochet top with your favorite pants. For me, that means oversized chinos or linen pants to balance out the skin I’m showing up top. A sweater is a great way to keep from showing too much skin, like this white Madewell polo sweater, this floral Farm Rio crewneck, or this super-chunky cardigan perfect for summer bonfires.
A button-down shirt is always one of my favorite looks, and a mesh-y version for summer works just as well over a bathing suit or a tank top. White and Warren makes some of my favorite shirts for this, because there’s a lot of variety in both the silhouette and the size of the weave. This cream mesh short sleeve number, this butter yellow crewneck sweater, and this cotton cashmere knit polo sweater are all perfect examples.
