A cardigan might not seem like an obvious piece to reach for in the summer, but we’re here to sing their praises. A lighter, slinkier version than heavy winter knits are perfect for tossing over your shoulders when you walk into the blast of A/C or a nighttime breeze. Shop our favorite summer cardigans below.
I know the idea of a twinset might seem outdated, but everything old always becomes new again. J.Crew’s Jackie fine-knit sweater is a modern interpretation of the First Lady’s iconic style, which I like in a crisp white or a sky blue. A delicate knit can be sexy without showing any skin, like this heirloom-worthy white pointelle knit from Doen, Nordstrom’s icy blue linen blend cardigan, or this slightly sheer Anthropologie number. Either would go beautifully with one of this season’s trendy A-line skirts and jewelry sandals.
If you want to work more color into your closet, a brightly colored cardigan is an easy match for your white jeans or linen trousers. Boden’s cotton candy crewneck is more fitted, all the better for tucking into your waistband. There are a few options with a little extra pizzazz, too. I love the scalloped detail on this pale pink Mint Velvet sweater. The v-neck is a great cut for anyone a little bit bustier, too. The ruffle trim on J.Crew’s ribbed sweater (in a fun turquoise) has a particularly beachy flair that reminds me of old Lilly Pulitzer or Palm Beach.
We’ve focused on a thinner, clingier knit but sometimes you still want something a little cozier. A chunkier, looser knit that you can still feel the breeze through. Eberjey’s cropped waffle sweater and Anthropologie’s cable-knit cream sweater would both look great with any high waisted linen pants in your closet. J.Crew’s oversized cotton cardigan has just the right amount of slouch, perfect for throwing over a t-shirt or tank top.
