The trench coat is one of the pieces every fashionable woman has in her closet. It’s such a versatile layering piece. You can wear it cinched at the waist, loose and flowing, or even go for one of this season’s trendier cropped versions. Shop our favorites now.
Let’s start with the most classic version, although there’s still some ways to mix and match certain elements. Do you want a belt to cinch at the waist? Veronica Beard’s trench has the buttoned-up appeal of Audrey Hepburn’s famous coat in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Mango’s belted coat has a looser, more relaxed vibe – and a much friendlier price point. And somewhere in between the two is this Lauren Ralph Lauren trench, complete with cute details like leather tabs and silver hardware.
Maybe you’re looking for something a little more playful, a little more trendy. By Malene Birger’s Campagna coat is a more deconstructed trench: flowing, bell sleeves, and an attached scarf instead of belt.I love the dramatic look of a cropped trench, especially when it’s thrown over a chunky oversized sweater or crisp tailoring. This Mango one, Rails’s bubble hemmed jacket, and Lululemon’s sleeker rain jacket are all great options.
Burberry and the British might have invented the modern trench coat, but I really believe the French have put their own spin on it. The silhouettes tend to more feminine and swingier, a little more relaxed. Sezane, one of my favorite brands, has two really great options: the Scott trench coat and the Bobby cropped version (complete with cute gingham lining!).
I’m also loving a non-khaki version this year, just to mix it up a bit. Banana Republic’s rich hunter green coat is a great way to easily inject some color into your wardrobe. Tuckernuck’s cropped, olive green version would look great with some of this season’s wide-leg jeans. Goop’s recently relaunched Gwyn delivers with wearable, elevated classics – like this creamy, vanilla colored timeless trench.
