What I’m Loving For September

Because we all deserve a little bit of back to school shopping.
by Susan Feldman August 27, 2021
What I’m Loving For September

What am I loving for September? It’s all about the pieces that will work now and later. The name of the game is “transitional”, and it’s all about satisfying that fall sartorial itch until we can bring out the heavy fall hitters. Pieces like blazers and loafers have a back-to-school buzz around them, and a lighter, layer-able cardigan will do the trick until you can dig into heavy knits. Finally, because I can’t get enough, a summery blue-and-white striped shirt makes everything feel fresh.

Blazer

Before I get a new coat, I got a new blazer. You can wear it with just about anything, but my favorite way lately is just over a t-shirt and cropped jeans, especially in an autumnal color way like this Veronica Beard brown houndstooth or this slate gray version. Everlane’s oversized blazer is at an unbeatable price point.

Loafer

What are you looking for in your perfect pair of loafers? If you’re ready for an investment pair, it doesn’t get more classic than Gucci. If it’s lugsole, then these Madewell shoes or these Franco Sarto shoes have your name all over it. Everlane’s modern loafer is a super-streamlined version in a chic camel.

Pant

Utility-inspired chinos in safari green are a welcome break from light-wash denim. Of course Gap and J.Crew have great all-American classic options, but I also love MOTHER’s cropped cargos, ASOS’s slouchy sage pants, and MOTHER’s high-waisted flares.

Cardigan

A light, layerable cardigan in a pretty cream with ruffle detailing is just the thing to wear with jeans now, and over a thin turtleneck later. Anine Bing’s Maxwell cardigan is on the thicker side, but the oatmeal color and cropped length keep it from feeling too wintry.

Blue & White Shirts

Kule’s Hutton shirt is named after style icon Lauren Hutton, and the slightly oversized fit is a perfect homage to the star’s affinity for menswear. Veronica Beard’s extra-long Gilda shirt is a favorite, and Alex Mill’s Wyatt shirt is another classic option.
