I don’t know how you feel about it, but shorts season always stresses me out. There’s chafing, unflattering cuts, and the fact that it’s just hard to make them look stylish. That’s why I’m so excited that the fashion set has embraced the Bermuda short. It’s a perfect styling solution for hot weather problems. A certain slouchy, high-waisted fit looks good on everyone, can be dressed up or down, and will keep you feeling breezy all summer long.
My favorite way to rock a pair of shorts these days is similar to Julia Roberts at the end of the Pretty Woman. High-waisted, pleated, and in a fun color. These kelly green Anthropologie Bermuda shorts, these pleated Theory shorts in poppy or white, or these navy linen Alex Mill shorts all fit the bill. They would look equally good with an espadrille or a leather slide, and you can really lean in to the season’s trends by pairing it with a top in the same color. Monochromatic dressing is an easy way to elevate something casual, like shorts.
Another one of the biggest trends of the season? Prints! Boden’s series of pull-on shorts are peppy and bright. All you have to do is pick the pattern that suits you best: lemon vine or Chesapeake bay poppy ? They also make a more breathable linen short, like this red-and-yellow firecracker print or this multi-floral bloom pattern. Banana Republic’s poplin blue-and-white stripe are an irresistible pair as well.
Still craving a denim short that isn’t full Daisy Duke? Anthropologie has a pair of slim-cut, frayed denim jorts from Favorite Daughter that would look great with a t-shirt and blazer. These paperbag, high-waisted shorts have a preppy appeal with the pleats and belt. J.Crew’s mid-length short in black adds instant cool to any outfit.
