The Retro Sneakers Trend We Can’t Get Enough Of

Everything old is new again.

The Retro Sneakers Trend We Can’t Get Enough Of

Everything old is new again, but some classics have more staying power than others. After a few years of designer sneakers that look as out there as possible, it’s time to get back to the essentials. Crisp white sneakers that are affordable, always look good, and feel a little bit nostalgic. Plus, they’re insanely easy to style because they go with everything. New year, new (old) sneakers.

So what are we talking about when we talk about retro sneakers? Probably whatever you’re picturing. It’s the sneakers of your youth! For me, the Stan Smiths by Adidas are up a pretty perfect sneaker for spring and summer. Just enough prep to dress up, but just enough street appeal to look cool. The Adidas Gazelle is a sleeker, more urban low profile sneaker. I love the blue suede version, which look especially chic with wide-leg black trousers and a cashmere crewneck. But you can’t go wrong with the black either!

New Balance has recently gotten a cool makeover thanks to brands like Aime Leon Dore and J.Crew falling back in love with the no-nonsense pair. I love their 574s in a marshmallow-y cream and white colorway. Nike’s Daybreak sneaker, with its combination of nylon and suede, makes a refreshing change from heavy leather. And I love the casual sportiness of a gum sole like on the Nike Skate shoes.

When I talk about updating the classics, this pair of Nike Blazers is exactly what I’m talking about. It’s the same classic shape we loved from 1977, with one fun twist: an extra-big Nike swoosh for a playful, modern twist.  If you want to stick to the OG, I can’t blame you. But maybe the high-top version will tempt you? Puma puts a spin on one of their go-to velcro styles with a fun, chunky platform.
