At this point, I think it’s safe to say—I love to entertain. Nothing makes me happier than bringing people together in my home. And one of my very favorite parts? Setting the table. For me, it’s a creative outlet—but it’s also something more. It sets the tone. It’s the first thing your guests see, and in a way, it says everything before you even do: come in, relax, we’re so happy you’re here.
Over the years, I’ve collected all kinds of pieces—some special, some simple—but what I’ve realized is that I come back to the same formula again and again. And the good news? It’s not complicated. We’ve just come off a season of big gatherings—Easter, Passover—but honestly, the summer ahead is just as full of reasons to gather. Whether it’s a casual dinner with another couple or a bigger group, a beautiful table always makes it feel just a little more special.
Remember just like getting dressed… it’s not about having more, it’s about knowing how to put it together. Here are a few of the things I always think about when I set mine.
My Go-To Formula for a Beautiful Table
Start with a base (neutral… but not required)
I often start with something neutral—it makes everything easy—but you absolutely don’t have to. A great table can begin with whatever you love. I’m usually thinking about tablecloths or placemats here… they really set the tone. Keep it simple, or go for something with a little personality—it all works.

Crate and Barrel Lanai Rectangular Placemat, $19.95
I love a rattan or wicker placemat as the foundation of whatever my tablescape is going to be. You can put pretty much anything on it—from something formal to something very modern—and it will do a lot of the heavy lifting for you.
Williams Sonoma Nito Charger, $19.95
Another great option is to get rattan or wicker chargers. I love these all year round. I actually own them in this color and a light color.
Layer, don’t match
I like a table that feels collected, not too “set.” Mixing textures—ceramic, glass, linen, even a little wood—makes everything feel more interesting and less predictable.
Peter Dunham x Hudson Grace Napkin, $32
Napkins are where you can really have fun. There are so many fabulous options at all different price points. I love the Peter Dunham collection at Hudson Grace—each fabric is more beautiful than the next. And if you’re feeling bold, mix a few different patterns.
Hudson Grace Tortoise Glass, $28
I know it may sound crazy, but these tortoise highballs go with everything. Just like in fashion—a great print can act like a neutral.
Add one thing that makes it special
This is where the personality comes in. A pop of color, a great napkin, beautiful glassware—or even something unexpected from your own home.

I collect brass elephants and often line them down the table. Etsy is a great source for these and other fun vintage pieces.
Keep it low and livable
Flowers and candles should feel inviting, not overwhelming. If guests can’t see each other across the table, it’s too much.
West Elm Recycled Vases (Set of 3), $56

Crate and Barrel Small Blue Glass Taper, $24.95
Lighting is really important, and you really can’t have too many candles or votives. Something fun to try is using taller candles—it creates a more dramatic setting.
Edit (always)
Before guests arrive, I take one thing away. It should feel effortless—not overdone. That’s where the magic is.
Use what you have
You don’t need to buy all new pieces. The best tables come from mixing what you already love in new ways.A few staples I use again and again.
Have fun
At the end of the day, this is about creating a moment—not perfection.
