I am not the kind of person who buys faux flowers or plants. I’m a regular at the DTLA flower market! But CG Hunter makes pieces that look really good, and I finally can put a tree in the weird sunless spot of my dining room! They’re also great for second homes, when you’re traveling a lot, or just beating the winter doldrums.
Can I tell you a secret? I was having a lunch at Soho House with a friend. The dining room is in a solarium, and there are gorgeous big olive trees everywhere. Guess what? They’re FAUX! I couldn’t believe it, but it makes a lot of sense. Who wouldn’t want full time, beautiful trees that require zero effort? So I’m embracing the faux, and making it chic.
This is the faux olive tree I have in my dining room, and I am so happy about it! For years, I wanted to put a tree in that corner. Well, I tried. What did it get me? A series of dead trees in succession that felt like I was pouring money down the drain. So I stopped, until now! When my tree arrived, I doctored it up a bit to make it feel more like my house. I put it in a basket and dotted it with Spanish moss for the full effect. The fiddle leaf fig (notoriously hard to keep alive) and the ficus options are lovely as well. I just have a weakness for olive trees.
These pieces work great on a smaller scale, too. I’m keeping a teeny olive topiary on my kitchen island for the weeks I just don’t make it to the flower market. Faux orchids make perfect sense to me. Imagine them on a stack of coffee table books or a side table in a very beautiful, but lesser-used room. This hot pink one or this classic white would liven up any formal living room or guest room.
