This is a confessional skirt story.
Not so many years ago, I abandoned the skirt. We had been friends for years and then, just not. With a few extra post-menopausal pounds on my derriere, I purged and struggled and ix-nayed skirts from the realm, which did not make much sense, or maybe I just ran out of skirt hangers. A devotee of school uniforms, mine, a black watch plaid pleated number, I was conditioned to be comfortable in a skirt. Micro-minis weren’t really my jam but I soldiered through the sixties and then loved the narrow pencil skirts that balanced those outsized shoulder pads. Wrapped skirts over narrow and then child bearing hips prevailed and then, at last ,long hippie skirts resurged until I hit the skirt wasteland.
This fall, I am back at “skirting” and have already become engaged to an animalistic maxi and a super chic belted midi wrap to wear everywhere Let the skirt games begin again, only now you can wear them with sneakers and booties and mules (personal favorite.)
Leather and vegan leather, formerly known as plether could lead your own skirt comeback as these will flatter most shapes and present a downtown girl vibe on even the most committed uptown girl variety. A belted hold it together midi.is certain to be a long term winner.
Play around with a neutral wrap in soft satin or cut printed velvet and pair them with a shorter boxy sweater or a basic tee. I am traveling back to that place in time where skirts and me were just pals — far less commitment than a dress and far more versatile.
