Nail polish has been around for a long time, and red nail polish since forever. The Chinese concocted some kind of beeswax, egg whites, gelatin, and vegetable dyes to adorn their talons (they liked ‘em long). The Egyptians could identify social status by the color of a person’s nails. In direct opposition to today, think Princesses Kate and Meghan’s, natural polish connoted a more humble background. A recent and totally unreliable study of the underlying meaning of women and their fingernails made the case for red nails telegraphing sexual precocity (in our case definitely, true). These days, and holidays, we are way into bringing more color into our lives which is why we vote for red nails. It is just so much more interesting to look at a fresh coat of vermillion tip tapping away on out ever present keyboards, even moving the kitchen sponge around on coffee splattered countertop is more entertaining when the fingers guiding it are some version of “Jungle Red.”
The range of reds goes from a more demure coral hued happy red to a blackened vixen red and the names want to send us to bed with a well worn copy of Henry Miller’s Tropic of Cancer i.e.: Lover’s Creep, Pretty Vulgar and the always the iconic Chanel “Vamp.”
